Well, I gave up on March. Too Southern. A friend of mine recently told me that she had just read the best Anita Brookner book yet. It’s called Visitors. I’d not read it yet but had it waiting on the shelf.
If you have never read Anita Brookner I highly recommend her books. The first one I read was Fraud and so far it is still my favorite. So to hear this book so highly praised has me intrigued. A little ways into it and it certainly seems a different story than her usual books. But there’s something odd about it. There’s something about the writing that is different from the other books of hers that I’ve read. I readily admit that I read her books for the writing rather than the story. And, to be honest, the stories are pretty much the same in every book.
So why is this one different? Did telling a (more or less) different story subconsciously affect the way she writes? Or have I just been reading earlier books and her writing is just different now? Or, have I just gotten used to her writing so that it no longer holds that enchantment for me? I find it hard to believe the latter. I’ve not read all her books and only read about one a year so it’s not like I’ve burned out on them. Still, it seems different to me. I guess I’ll just have to keep reading and see how it plays out. If something has changed, I hope it’s her and not me. That way at least I can go back to reading her earlier works and still fall in love with her writing again each time.
